About University of Maryland, College Park
Established on the University of Maryland, College Park campus in 1968, the Department of Family Science (FMSC) is now one of five departments in the School of Public Health. The Department joined the College of Health and Human Performance (HHP) in 1992; HHP became a School of Public Health in 2007 and was fully accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health in 2010.
The Department received state approval to offer its first independent Ph.D. program in 2000. In 2007, the Department established a new Ph.D. program in Maternal and Child Health when the college became a School of Public Health. In that same year, the University granted the Department’s request to change its name from Family Studies to Family Science. In 2009, the Department established the Center on Young Adult Health and Development, the first university center devoted exclusively to researching the health behaviors of this age group in the nation. FMSC also moved its academic offices and therapy clinic from their former home in Marie Mount Hall to newly renovated space in the School of Public Health building in 2009.
FMSC’s location within a School of Public Health has enabled it to enhance its curr...icula with public health and epidemiology content, expand research collaborations with other public health faculty, and sharpen its focus on family health and health disparities. FMSC graduates at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels are being prepared to tackle critical family and health issues, and to address significant workforce needs within the larger fields of human services and public health.
