| Department Summary The Department of Psychology at San José State (SJSU) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Clinical Psychology with scholarly expertise in the area of health and wellness in communities of color, broadly defined. The vision of the Psychology Department is to provide high-quality education in psychology that fosters the development of students so that they will make worthy contributions to society. Responsibilities San José State University is a teaching institution that values mentored research. This position involves duties related to teaching, research, and service to the Department and University. Teaching Teaching responsibilities for this position will include undergraduate and graduate coursework in clinical psychology, the candidate’s area of specialization, and as needed by the department. Undergraduate courses may include writing in psychology, statistics, research methods, psychopathology (child and/or adult), clinical psychology, and introductory psychology. The MS Clinical Psychology graduate program is rooted in evidence-based practice and seeks to train master’s level psychotherapists consistent within that framework. Graduate course responsibilities may include teaching child or adult psychopathology, family and couples therapy, lifespan development, psychology of contemporary families, theories and methods of psychotherapy, addictions, applied research methods, crisis and trauma counseling, gender and ethnicity in psychotherapy, and fieldwork. The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement. Research The candidate will be expected to develop a program of research and to pursue both internal and external funding. The candidate must maintain a productive research program, which may result from collaborative research across the University, with other academic institutions, or other external agencies. Student mentoring is valued in our department, and a successful candidate will mentor and support undergraduate and graduate students of diverse backgrounds in conducting research. Service The candidate will participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committee and other service assignments. The successful applicant should be prepared to take an active role in the MS Clinical Psychology graduate program. Responsibilities on this committee include serving as a mentor and advisor around issues of graduate student development, participating in program requirements, and providing clinical case consultation or supervision.
